History

The Cork Academy of Music Ltd. was initiated in 1994. Classes were held in premises of the Glen Rovers G.A.A. in Blackpool, Cork City.  After the first year, the project relocated to larger premises in the Sunbeam Industrial Park.

After a Disastrous fire which destroyed our premises, we relocated with the kind help of the Christian brothers’ to our new premises at the North Monastery school, they have looked after us well and have given us a lot of assistance for which we thank them. 

Development & Progression.

Six hundred students both Adults and Children have undergone training at the Project since its inception to a Certified Qualification standard.  There has been 100% success rate in achieving the aims of the project.  Future participants will have similar expectations. 

Contribution to the Community 

Cork Academy of Music Ltd. has helped raise the expectation and awareness of its target group and realize the true potential of the individual.  This is shown by the enormous increase in applications for admittance to the Project.  There have been enquiries throughout the EU. The Academy has been used by Derry City Partnership, Togher Community Association (Cork) and Galway City Partnership.  The junior department of the Academy offers a music service to primary schools within the community, as part of their music curriculum. 

Profile.

Established in 1994 to provide training in music skills. 

Voluntary Board of Management.

Students External Examinations: over a ten year period, in both theoretical and practical we have achieved an average of 75% in the Associated Board Royal Schools of Music examinations. 

Students who completed the foundation and Access course at the Academy and went on to Third Level Education:

We have over 45 students who have completed music degrees ranging from PhD, B.Mus, MA.Mus, Higher Diploma in Music, Certificate of Music, we have 7 students presently attending university. 

Aims and Objectives 

To raise the level of understanding of music to create a love of music through this art form, in doing so to play a part in helping our community.

Other Activities. 

Outreach to local schools, teaching music and singing skills to children.  Primary Teachers method of instruction course for the teaching of music to children.  Jazz Summer School – 7th Year.  Academy Orchestra: - Performances for Cork Year of Culture.  Our outreach programme has now developed further in both cork city and county providing music education for children and young adults.
